Expensive!!!!!

I never had any idea how expensive the stuff in Japan till I had the horrifying experience of shopping here. Throughout my 2 years in KL, my Japanese teachers had always told me "nihon no mono wa takai desu yo." which, translated simply means that the items in Japan are expensive. However they failed to inform me as of how expensive the things here can get. I mean like, before I went to KL to study, I knew for sure that the things in KL would be a more expensive than the stuff in Sibu. But what we're talking about here is just 1 or 2 ringgit difference.

Therefore, it is just natural for me to think that the stuff in Japan would only be like 2 or 3 ringgit more than in KL. But man, was I wrong. Take for example a 0.5l bottle of coke back in Malaysia would have cost like RM1.80, give or take a few cents right? Well, here 1 would cost you ¥150. Converted in RM, that would be approximately RM4.50. Wow!!!! That is like 2.5 times the price in Malaysia. And that is just a simple comparison. What about groceries, clothes, books and stationeries?

We (Malaysian students in Japan) also say that Japanese goods are 3 times more expensive of that in Malaysia. You see, ¥100 is equivalent to RM3. At first, when I first set foot on the land of the rising sun, I converted every item that I bought into Malaysian ringgit. Thus, I made every purchase with a heavy heart. Imagine, buying a sweater that costs around ¥2000 would be like RM60. Yikes!! But after a month here, I've learned the 'smart' way that all of our seniors use. Think this way: ¥100 = RM1 instead of ¥100 = RM3 cos if I think like the latter, every time I purchase any item, my heart will break. Hahaha....

Truth to be told, I feel lucky to have not chosen Tokyo NCT because the stuff there is even MORE expensive because, duh, it's Tokyo that we're talking about here... 1 meal (if you eat out in family restaurants or buy a bentou, box meal) here costs like, minimum ¥500 that is, yes, get this, RM15. !!!!!! And we haven't even started talking about the price of a simple meal in Tokyo. I've been there several times and the cheapest meal I've ever eaten is ¥1000 = RM30. That's double of Oyama (the place where I'm living in). Therefore, I have decided to just eat in the school canteen and NOT eat out under any circumstances.

I'm going back to Malaysia during the 45-day summer break. Thank God!!! I don't think I can take the expensive stuff there any longer. I wanna go SHOPPING!!!! Right now I have a terrible crisis here. I'm running out of shoes. Need to go back to Malaysia to restock=> Maybe I'll spend a week in KL before going back to Sibu considering the fact that in Sibu, you don't have much choice of items as most of them are either (1) pirated goods from China, or (2) too damn expensive if compared to KL (I know, I know, we must make allowance for the import and transportation costs, that's why I'm resorting to shopping in KL ^_~).
